The Fire Prevention  System Principle

The approved technology allows controlled reduction of oxygen levels within a room or protected area. Releasing nitrogen into the protected area lowers oxygen concentrations to a level just below the specified ignition threshold for the materials present, and holds them there. Such an atmosphere eliminates the possibility of an open fire developing: the remaining oxygen is no longer sufficient to sustain a fire or permit it to spread.
